One of my favorite people, even before I ever met him, was Jay Francis, but that’s another story. What is of interest right now is that Jay loves food: eating, creating and researching, is a great cook and certainly a fun person to go on an adventure with.
A week ago I traveled with Jay to Louise, Texas, about an hour and a half from Houston, to a Volunteer Firemen’s Fried Chicken picnic for research on his fried chicken project: The Fried Chicken Blog. It was a great little trip.
On the way Jay and I stopped in Wharton at Hinze’s Barbque where I picked up a slice of chocolate meringue pie to eat later, baked by Marlies, who has been making pies there for over 27 years, visited Junior’s Smokehouse, drove around the town and visited Dinosaur Park. We also drove through El Campo where I finally got to visit Prasek’s Hillje Smokehouse, scoring some peppery beef jerky and a outstanding sausage, cheese & jalapeño kolche.
I love small towns and Louise, TX did not disappoint. We met lots of friendly people and the fried chicken was better than most I have had in Houston, not to mention for only $8.00 we got half a chicken, rice with gravy, beans with bacon and an iced tea.
